How Brexit created political instability in Britain

British politics was turned upside down after the country voted in favor of Brexit in 2016, giving a major boost to Boris Johnson who had openly backed Britain’s exit from the European Union.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron was forced to resign in July 2016 after Britain voted for Brexit in a referendum. This led to Theresa May assuming the post of Prime Minister.

However, May resigned in July 2019 after failing to secure parliamentary support for his Brexit deal. In fact, May herself faced a vote of no confidence as Tory members sought to oust her from power after she postponed the UK Parliament’s vote on the Brexit deal. May, however, survived the vote of no confidence by 200 votes to 117.

Then-Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn called for another no-confidence vote against May over the Brexit deal. However, the motion was defeated by 325 votes to 306.

Britain has had a tumultuous time since Cameron left office due to Brexit. Before him, Gordon Brown served as Prime Minister for three years from 2007 to 2010 and served as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Tony Blair.

Blair enjoyed a long term as Prime Minister from 1997 to 2007. Gordon Brown resigned as leader of the Labor Party in 2010 and presented his resignation to the Queen while asking her to invite opposition leader David Cameron to form the next government.
